Alcohol / Amphetamine / AMT / Benzodiazepines

DRUG: Alcohol

AKA: Booze, bevvies, ethanol, juice

FROM: Pubs, clubs, shops

TAKEN: Orally

LASTS: 1hr per unit of alcohol

WHAT HAPPENS? You may feel relaxation, disengaged and laugh a lot, your reactions will be slower. However, you could experience nausea and vomiting, even loss of consciousness at higher levels

DANGERS: Alcohol can lead to liver and heart problems. Infertility and weight gain. Irresponsible behaviour and Poor mental health and wellbeing. Seizures and death.

COST: Ranging greatly depending on type of alcohol.

HARM REDUCTION: Don’t mix alcohol with other substances especially drugs/medications. For every alcoholic drink have a non-alcoholic drinks on a night out, water is best. Ensure alcohol free days and stay within weekly recommended guidelines for safe drinking levels: 3-4units a day for men and 2-3units a day for women. Try not to ‘binge’ drink on nights out, if you do ensure up to 48 hours before having another drink of alcohol. Inhibitions are reduced under the influence of alcohol, be aware of your surroundings and drink with trusted friends. Do not drink and drive. Never leave your drink unattended as it may be ‘spiked’ with another substance or allow someone else to get your drink.

 

DRUG: Amphetamine(s)

AKA: Speed, Whizz, Billy, Base…Methamphetamine: Ice, Glass, Meth, Tina

FROM: Made in labs across the world.

TAKEN: It can be snorted or swallowed, rubbed on tongue/gum, injected. Methamphetamine can be smoked, swallowed or injected

LASTS: Can last up to 12 hours if using methamphetamine, amphetamine effects lasts around 2 hours

WHAT HAPPENS? You will feel alert, energetic and confident but it can reduce appetite and increase levels of anxiety and paranoia.

DANGERS: Severe cravings and addiction may develop in addition to severe ‘comedowns’ causing low mood and depression. Weight loss and long term health problems are also consequences of using amphetamine. If injecting veins may become damaged and increased risk of BBV (Blood Borne Virus)

COST: £10/g –speed, £20/g - base, £30/g – meth (prices vary)

HARM REDUCTION: Never mix substances together especially with alcohol. Ensure you don’t use alone and are with company that you trust in case of any unwanted side effects. Always keep a designated safe person who is aware of substances people are taking. Binges of substances can be dangerous so it is important to ensure that you rest your body (you only have one) and keep healthy during your ‘rest’ periods from substances. Be careful of using these substances if you are prone to mental health problems, in a low mood, feeling anxious, depressed or are unwell physically. Avoid using substances in dangerous areas as many can reduce the pain threshold, so you could injure yourself and not feel or realise it! Be selfish with your paraphernalia, including straws or needles, as sharing may spread disease such a hepatitis C. If injecting, ensure to attend a needle exchange and adopt safer injecting techniques.

 

DRUG: AMT

AKA: Alpha Methyltryptamine, Alpha methyl, IT-290, 3-IT

FROM: Made in labs! Psychedelic Tryptamine, Synthetic hallucinogen and stimulant

TAKEN: Swallowed, Insufflated (snorted)

LASTS: 2-4 hours

WHAT HAPPENS? You may experience euphoria, stimulation, open and closed eyed visuals, empathogenic (google this word!) but also can cause nausea, vomiting, confusion at high doses, muscle aches, restlessness, anxiety and extremely unpleasant visuals at high doses

DANGERS: Effects can take over 2 hours to fully develop and upping your dose too early can lead to very unpleasant experiences and overdose

COST: £5 per pill, £30 gram of powder

HARM REDUCTION: Avoid if prone to mental health problems. Don’t use if feeling anxious or depressed as AMT can intensify these feelings leading to a very unpleasant experience. The effects of AMT can take over 2 hours to fully begin. If you feel the effects are not strong enough always wait 2 & a half hours from your initial dose before re-dosing as upping your dose too early has often caused unpleasant experiences and overdose. Always start low with your doses especially if you are a first time user or inexperienced with hallucinogens. AMT doses range from 15-25mg (Mild) to 200mg (Very strong) although purity between different batches can vary considerably. Stay with people you know and trust to look after you; Don’t mix AMT with other drugs or alcohol. Avoid using substances in dangerous areas as many can reduce the pain threshold, so you could injure yourself and not feel or realise it!

 

DRUG: Benzodiazepines

AKA: Benzos, Valium, blues

FROM: Prescribed by GP, internet, street

TAKEN: Swallowed, however some people may inject them

LASTS: 2-12hrs+

WHAT HAPPENS? You may experience relaxation, drowsiness and mild euphoria but also anxiety and paranoia

DANGERS: Overdose due to varying levels and mixing, addiction, vomiting, seizures and risk of injury

COST: Varies depending on type and quantity, but can be as little as £1

HARM REDUCTION: Never mix substances together especially with alcohol, high risk of overdose. Binges of substances can be dangerous so it is important to ensure that you rest your body (you only have one) and keep healthy during your ‘rest’ periods from substances. Be careful of using these substances if you are prone to mental health problems, in a low mood, feeling anxious, depressed or are unwell physically. Avoid using substances in dangerous areas as many can reduce the pain threshold so you could injure yourself and not feel or realise it! Benzodiazepines can create addiction and withdrawal can be dangerous so it is important to seek medical advice if physical addiction has developed. If injecting benzodiazepines, ensure to attend a needle exchange and adopt safer injecting techniques.
